Abstract:
Nanophotonic integrated circuits, a novel technology platform in which nanodimensioned photonic components are built within electronic circuits using standard manufacturing processes, will revolutionize the field of optics.  In this article, technologist and IP attorney Kirk Hermann discusses the impact of nanophotonics on computer networking.  He argues that photonics will provide next generation interconnections which will allow transmission between computers at speed ten times those of today.  Ultimately, he concludes, photonics can be scaled up to accommodate future transmission speeds of more than one thousand times those of today.
