Just as environmental opposition has plagued biotechnology, the development of nanotechnology is certain to be met by fierce resistance from environmental groups. Indeed, at the dawn of 2004, the environmental backlash against nanotechnology is mounting. In this article, Rice University Professors Kristen M. Kulinowski and Vicki L. Colvin provide an overview of the environmental issues posed by nanotechnology. They raise a host of scientific and regulatory questions and warn that environmental uncertainties could derail the commercialization of nanotechnology. They conclude by calling upon policymakers and technical communities to generate answers to the looming health and safety questions and quell the environmental backlash.
