Abstract:
Molecular electronics, the construction of electronic circuit architectures from individual molecules, represents an opportunity for the ultimate in miniaturization of the integrated circuit chip. Since developing the tools to study the possible utility of molecules in constructing circuits, scientists have amassed a wealth of data describing the electronic properties of molecules, much of which shows molecules to be ideal candidates for electronic applications. The challenge now lies in developing a theoretical framework in which to understand this data and determining how to incorporate these molecular systems into current integrated circuit designs.
