Nanotechnology and the Future of Displays

Abstract:
Recently, many major television manufacturers have begun to consider using new nanomaterials to produce affordable flat panel displays. In this article, technologist Bryan Wilson reviews the impact of nanotechnology on the future of displays. Traditional technologies such as liquid crystal and plasma displays could benefit from the incorporation of nanomaterials. For example, the impending shortage of indium tin oxide combined with its brittle properties could cause manufacturers to utilize conductive, transparent nanotube films in existing displays. In addition to improving existing products, nanotechnology could also have a revolutionary impact on the display industry. A variety of new technologies ranging from organic light emitting diodes to nanotube-based field emitters could displace existing displays.
