Emerging Safety Issues at University Nanomaterials Labs: Calling Officer Buckle and Gloria Volume 6, Issue 4
Authors: Paul C. Sarahan, Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P.
Abstract:
Many of the research and development activities so critical to the future of nanotechnology occur in university labs across the nation. These activities raise safety concerns given the unique properties of nanomaterials. These safety concerns have been magnified as a result of recent incidents at university labs. Along with these concerns, universities face the overarching need to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations. This article discusses federal safety regulations applicable to all private universities and to public universities in states that have been authorized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to enforce the federal requirements. The article also addresses state safety requirements applicable to public universities in selected states. To ensure compliance with these federal or state requirements, most universities must document their consideration of the potential hazards present at their nanomaterials labs, and must conduct this analysis on a periodic basis.
