Current Trends in Patenting Graphene and Graphene-Based Inventions
Volume 8, Issue 1

Chinh H. Pham and Roman Fayerberg

Graphene is a two-dimensional form of carbon with exceptional physical and electrical properties. Because graphene has shown potential for many industrial applications, there has been a considerable amount of activity in the development of graphene and graphene-based products. Such increase in the commercial development of graphene is reflected in the increase in the number of patent applications filed. This article examines the current patent landscape, as well as the trends in a number of patents issued and patent applications filed in the United States for graphene-based inventions. It also identifies potential “blocking” patents, and provides examples of patents and patent applications directed to specific graphene-based products.
