An Overview of USPTO’s Class 977-Nanotechnology in 2010
Volume 8, Issue 1

Francisco Castro

Class 977 was created to assist examiners and practitioners in the search of prior art related to nanotechnology. Because of the broad scope of Class 977, its art collection can be a source of information from which to compile a practical and useful picture of the current state in nanotechnology patenting. This picture, while not always complete, can be used as a starting point from which to analyze current strategies and guide future efforts. This article provides an overview of Class 977 in 2010, including which companies or entities, countries, and areas of technology were most active. Such an overview may also serve as a benchmark from which future trends in nanotechnology patenting can be identified.
