The Increasing Role of Strategic Investors in Nanotechnology: Opportunities, Risks, and Negotiation Points

Nanotechnology holds the promise of a future where clothes no longer wrinkle, energy storage devices are charged instantly and last for weeks, and chemotherapy drugs are precisely targeted to cancer cells. None of these developments will be possible, however, without substantial investments. As financial venture capital firms have experienced limited success in nanomaterials investing, start-ups are increasingly relying on strategic investors from the chemical industry. This article discusses some of the issues start-ups must consider when negotiating with strategic investors.
