Defense Drivers for Nanotechnology Commercialization: Technology, Case Studies, and Legal Issues
Volume 9, Issue 1

Authors:
Frank Murray, J. Steven Rutt, George Ash, Larry Lian, and Bruce Wu

Abstract:
Defense has emerged as an important, steady driver for nanotechnology research and commercialization. Examples of leading defense nanotechnologies include composites and coatings. Several case studies are noted including DARPA. Selected legal topics are also noted. For example, DOD rules regarding allocation of patent and technical data rights between the contractor and the government present both opportunities and pitfalls for prospective contractors or recipients of federal funding. Nanotechnology firms need to understand and adhere to those rules—including the strictly-enforced disclosure and marking requirements—to mitigate the risks of losing rights to which they otherwise might be entitled.
