Quantum Dot Displays: Giving LCDs a Competitive Edge Through Color

Abstract:
Quantum dots comprise a new class of material that can be tuned to emit light very efficiently at precise red, green, and blue wavelengths, creating an ideal light spectrum for LCD screens. Quantum dot technology is bringing wide color gamut to LCDs, giving them a leg up on another advantage that once belonged to OLED screens. Research and development efforts are focused on creating quantum dot products that will meet the increasing demands of product applications. Display products are getting brighter and larger, and are now expected to last beyond 30,000 to 50,000 hours in operation. This article summarizes the advantages and challenges for quantum dot displays.
